How to Prepare Sharp, Accurate Shirt Printing Files for High-Quality DTF Printing

One of the most critical factors determining whether your T-shirt printing will come out beautifully, sharp, and true to color is “preparing the original file”. Even if your DTF printer is state-of-the-art and has high-resolution print heads, if the original file is distorted, blurry, or incorrectly color-calibrated, the printed design will not meet your expectations.

At Screen168, we always emphasize the importance of pre-flight inspection before production. Today, we have compiled a simple guide on how to prepare files for T-shirt printing that covers both beginners and graphic designers to ensure you get a perfect 100% print quality.

5 Essential Rules for Preparing DTF T-Shirt Printing Files

1. Resolution Must Be 300 DPI (HD Quality)

The resolution of your image file directly affects the sharpness of the printed design:

  • Printing Standard: 300 DPI (Dots Per Inch) will ensure that text, edges, and fine details are crisp and clear, without pixelation.

  • Caution: Images downloaded from Facebook, LINE, or general websites usually have a resolution of 72 DPI, designed for mobile screens only. When enlarged for T-shirt printing, the design will appear pixelated and jagged.

2. Set the Artboard Size to Actual Print Size

Before starting your design, it is recommended to create an artboard size that matches the actual size you want to print on the T-shirt, such as:

  • Mini / Chest Size: Width 8–10 cm (starting at 30 THB)

  • Standard A4 Size: Width approximately 20 x 29 cm

  • Special Large A3 Size: Width approximately 29 x 40 cm

Tip: Setting the size to 1:1 from the start allows our printing team to queue your print job immediately without guessing the size, ensuring the design fits the T-shirt perfectly.

3. Remove Background for Transparency

In DTF printing, the printer sprays white ink underbase at every pixelated point in the file. If you send a file with a white box background, the printer will print a white box on the shirt!

  • To ensure only the design prints and floats on the fabric, always remove the background (Die-cut) to transparency.

  • Save the file as PNG (transparent background), PDF, or AI formats only (avoid JPEG as it does not support transparent backgrounds).

4. Use CMYK Color Mode for Accurate Printing

Mobile screens and computers display colors in RGB (bright neon colors), but every printer worldwide prints in CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) ink.

If you design in RGB mode, the colors may appear duller when printed in CMYK, especially neon greens, reflective oranges, or bright blues. To ensure the best color match, set your program (Illustrator / Photoshop) to CMYK Color Mode from the start.

5. Minimum Stroke Weight

While DTF can print very thin lines, lines thinner than 1 millimeter (approximately 2-3 pt) may not have enough surface area for the hot-melt adhesive to adhere properly, leading to potential line breakage during film removal or washing.

Tip: For very thin text or graphics, slightly increasing the stroke weight will ensure maximum durability after washing.

Which File Format is Best for T-Shirt Printing?

  • Adobe Illustrator (.AI) / Vector (.SVG, .EPS): Best option as vector files can be enlarged without losing quality (don’t forget to create outlines for text before sending).

  • Photoshop (.PSD / .TIFF): Suitable for painted images, realistic images, layered designs, and setting a resolution of 300 DPI or higher.

  • Image File .PNG: Most convenient and popular, especially for designs from Canva, Procreate, or iPad, with transparent backgrounds and large sizes.
